A gift of both lyricism and humor

" Brouwers music presented here is all from the mid-90s. The disc opens with a cross-cultural string quartet in three movements that refers to the atmosphere of Virginia, where the composer has spent time, and evokes country music and scenes of mountain and river. It is a beautiful work, attractive and interesting. Prelude and Vivace is a clarinet concerto with chamber group. The Prelude is beautiful, the Vivace, zany, with an amusing use of the siren. The two-movement Horn Sonata is an expressive and quietly satisfying work. Brouwer has a gift for both lyricism and humor. This is an encouraging introduction to her music. "
