Two Pieces For Viola represent the study of a new and an old form. Shortly before beginning this work, I had become intrigued by the possibility of creating musical form based on the Chaos theories in James's Gleick's book, Chaos. The form for X4 - 1= 0 was the result. In the book, analysis of types of turbulence showed the predominantly predictable nature and yet sometime chaotic moments of, for instance, the motion of water through a pipe or of wind currents in a tunnel. It also stated that ... "the attracting pull of four points ... creates basins of attractions. ...But each particle does not move independently - its motion depends very much on the motion of its neighbors - and in a smooth flow, the degrees of freedom can be few. .. ." These formulae of motion through space seemed quite applicable to the sound-motion of music through space and time. X4 - 1 = 0 was the first piece of a series of form-studies inspired by Gleick's book. Chaconne2, a loose version of the traditional form of variations on a chord progression, is based on two interwoven chord progressions, one traditional, the other non-traditional. A parody on romantic treatments of Baroque music, with a smile at Beethoven-style endings, it is virtuosic in the tradition of chaconnes.
